It sits on a limestone foundation and has a rear brick extension and a frame summer kitchen.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the finest surviving example of the Federal style in Putnam County, with vernacular treatment of gables and chimneys, restrained ornament and a Greek Revival interior. Its architectural integrity inside and out is described as excellent. It is also tied to Edward Pulsifer, one of mid-nineteenth century Hennepin's most prominent citizens.","narrative":"Built in 1844 above the Illinois River just north of Hennepin, this two-and-a-half-story brick house rests on a limestone foundation. Its gables rise above the roof as brick copings, and paired chimneys at each end are linked by brick parapets, features associated with vernacular Federal style buildings in Illinois. Inside, the woodwork is Greek Revival, including molded-panel doors, shouldered architraves and a parlor mantel with an anthemion motif. The house was built for Edward Pulsifer, a Vermont-born merchant who dealt in general goods and real estate and owned a fleet of freight and grain boats. He promoted Hennepin as a future commercial center, but river traffic declined and railroads bypassed the town, and he moved to Chicago at age 51. The house stayed in the family until 1904 and later housed farmers and tenant families. It was recognized as the finest surviving Federal style example in Putnam County, with excellent integrity, and for its link to Pulsifer.","period_of_significance":"1844-1864","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal style (vernacular interpretation) with Greek Revival interior","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and vacant at the time of nomination; the Village of Hennepin became owner on January 1, 1979.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.301448-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/8939/28893925/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/79000864.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000864/7feb3b55e5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000864/7feb3b55e5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Pulsifer_House.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Pulsifer_House.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893925","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Pulsifer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24061450"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/putnam-county/pulsifer-edward-house-79000864/"}
