It is also significant in local history as the home of Mickleberry Ferrell, a pioneer settler of LaGrange, whose daughter created the well-known Ferrell Gardens on part of his original tract.","narrative":"Set on 5.06 landscaped acres at 1402 Vernon Road in LaGrange, this one-story Greek Revival cottage dates to about 1832-33 and was presumably built by Mickleberry Ferrell, an early settler who bought the land from a speculator. Its front doorway, symmetrical windows and portico with four Roman Doric columns reflect the classical tradition. Later owners reshaped it. C.T. Freeman changed the roofline, added a dormer and shortened the front windows around 1909, and in 1937 the Atlanta firm Ivey and Crook redesigned the interior, opening the original four-room plan and adding Neo-Classical details. The grounds hold large magnolias, boxwood hedges, a tenant house and a steel barn. The house matters for showing how classical design persisted across a century of Southern building, and for its link to Ferrell, whose daughter Sarah developed the nearby Ferrell Gardens, once widely known in western Georgia. It is the only surviving Ferrell family home in the area.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 and 1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown (original builder); 1937 renovation plans by Ivey and Crook of Atlanta","architectural_style":"Greek Revival with Neo-Classical alterations","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, occupied and used as a private residence when nominated in 1979.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.613015-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/79000748.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000748/5bcfbfaf18-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000748/5bcfbfaf18-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ferrell-Holder_House;_LaGrange,_GA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ferrell-Holder_House;_LaGrange,_GA.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84001266","name":"Vernon Road Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/vernon-road-historic-district-84001266/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209725","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134464305"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/troup-county/ferrell-holder-house-79000748/"}
