It was designed and begun in 1858 by Wesley Gaines Kimbrough, with later additions, and two original outbuildings survive.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Woodland is architecturally important in Georgia as a well-proportioned, largely intact example of Georgian Greek Revival design. Its facade, grained woodwork, large wood-paneled closets and surviving outbuildings (a log corn bin and a carriage house) are characteristic of a late antebellum Southern plantation.","narrative":"Woodland is a low, broad Greek Revival plantation house northeast of Eatonton in Putnam County, Georgia. Wesley Gaines Kimbrough, a farmer and mason, designed it and began building in 1858, and he and his wife Martha Williams moved in during 1860. The painted hewn-timber house has a full entablature, chamfered columns, pilasters, and a center entrance framed by transom lights and sidelights. Inside, the original pine floors and ceilings, grained door and window frames, walnut doors and large wood-paneled closets give the rooms a distinctive character. A two-story rear addition was made around 1880 and a small room around 1900. Two original outbuildings remain: a hewn-log corn bin and a carriage house with an unusual cross-braced structure. The house was listed for its architectural value as an intact example of Greek Revival design on a Southern cotton plantation. At the time of nomination it had been vacated and was deteriorating, with restoration planned.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Wesley Gaines Kimbrough, farmer and mason, designed and began construction","architectural_style":"Georgian Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"The house served as a private residence until it was vacated about four years before the nomination; it was deteriorating, especially the rear addition, and the owning family intended to begin restoration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.33057-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/79000741.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209312","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/putnam-county/woodland-79000741/"}
