It includes a grist and flour mill (ca. 1886), cotton gin, dam, bridge, and two houses, on about 33.5 acres.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the complex is a rare, largely intact example of the integrated rural industrial complexes once common in Georgia. Its 1880s mill retains much of its original milling equipment and a breastshot waterwheel, and its 1830s water-powered cotton gin is one of very few left in the state. The site also has archaeological potential from the Walnut Factory remains and a possible mill village.","narrative":"Tanner's Mill is a rural industrial complex on Walnut Creek, a fork of the Middle Oconee River, in Hall County, Georgia. It grew from the 1830s into the early twentieth century under the Tanner family. The centerpiece is a three-story, clapboard grist and flour mill dating from 1886, still holding much of its milling equipment, including granite and European quartzite stones and a breastshot waterwheel more than twenty feet across. Nearby are a water-powered cotton gin built in the 1830s, the ruins of the Walnut Factory wool mill, a wooden dam, a 1914 iron truss bridge, the Tanner house, a miller's house built in 1895, and a barn. At its peak the mill ground over 12,000 bushels a year and served Hall and neighboring counties. Flood damage in 1961 ended operations. The complex is valued as a surviving record of Georgia's rural mill industry, with further archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1830-1920","architect_builder":"David and Moses Tanner","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Marked vacant and not operating; the mill last ran in 1961 after flood damage, and the cotton gin is in disrepair.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.53433-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/79000729.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208592","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/hall-county/tanners-mill-79000729/"}
