Milledge Avenue in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia, built in 1896 and designed by its owner, W. W. Thomas. It now serves as a sorority house.","why_significant":"The house is significant architecturally as a representative of Neo-Classical Revival in the Eclecticism of the 1890s, with a design said to be influenced by the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. It is also significant historically as the home of locally prominent families who contributed to the financial, civic and cultural life of Athens. It is considered the finest known work of its architect-owner.","narrative":"Built in 1896 at 530 S. Milledge Avenue in Athens, this large Neo-Classical Revival house was designed by its owner, William Winstead Thomas, a civil engineer, architect and insurance executive who had served on the commission for the Georgia State Capitol. Its Ionic columns, balustrades, dentils and Corinthian frieze give it one of the more elaborate facades on the street, and its design is said to reflect his visit to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Inside are a grand oak-trimmed entry hall, stained glass, sliding doors to formal parlors and a dining room with a mural of High Shoals. After Thomas died in 1904, the house passed to the Hulme family and then to James Yancey Carithers, a state senator and streetcar organizer. In 1939 it was sold to a sorority, which added a cinder block dormitory wing at the rear. The house is valued as the finest known work of its designer and as a home of prominent local families.","period_of_significance":"1896","architect_builder":"W. W.
