It is the only known structure remaining from the Villa de Branciforte, founded by Spain in 1797.","why_significant":"It is the only surviving building from the Villa de Branciforte, the last of three Spanish civil settlements in California, and one of only two adobes left in Santa Cruz. It was continuously inhabited and never unroofed or moved. The site also holds prehistoric and historic archaeological deposits that may reveal how ordinary settlers lived before American control.","narrative":"This small adobe house at 1351 North Branciforte Avenue in Santa Cruz is the only known structure left from the Villa de Branciforte, a civil settlement Spain founded in 1797. It measures about 21 by 38 feet, with two-foot-thick walls of large adobe bricks divided into two rooms. The house was never unroofed, abandoned or moved. Later changes included a wooden south wall, a rear addition and 1921 stucco, much of which recent owners removed while restoring the veranda, shake roof and mud-plaster finish. The earliest traced occupants were Jose de Jesus Lorenzana and his family, who lived there by the 1840s. The exact construction date remains uncertain, though the large brick size and pottery fragments suggest early origins. Excavations found chert flakes, majolica sherds, musket balls and other artifacts, giving evidence of both prehistoric use and everyday settler life. Its modest character makes it a rare example of colonial California housing.","period_of_significance":"c. 1803-1848","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; earlier stucco, porch and dormer were removed and the veranda and mud-plaster finish were being restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.445569-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/79000552.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000552/9c49edb1bc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000552/9c49edb1bc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Mrwrite","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brancifotre_Adobe.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Mrwrite</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brancifotre_Adobe.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861840","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branciforte_Adobe","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4956459"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-cruz-county/branciforte-adobe-79000552/"}
