Weber Avenue on the south bank of the Stockton Channel in downtown Stockton, California, built in stages in 1891, c. 1894 and c. 1897.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is architecturally significant as a fine example of a turn-of-the-century vernacular industrial building and the oldest intact building on the Stockton Channel. It is historically significant for its ties to the Sperry Flour Company, the largest flour miller in California in the late 19th century, and to Stockton's grain milling, warehousing and shipping trade.","narrative":"Along the south bank of the Stockton Channel in downtown Stockton stands a two-story brick warehouse, 100 feet wide and 300 feet long, with heavy timber roof and floor framing. It was built in three stages: the eastern 100-by-150-foot portion in 1891, and the first floor of the western half around 1894 and 1897. It served the neighboring Sperry Union Flour Mill, now demolished, and was once linked to the mill by a second-story walkway. The oldest section stored the mill's well-known Drifted Snow Flour. The building's simple corbelled frieze, brick parapet and gently arched openings reflect late 19th century industrial design, and it is described as the oldest intact building on the channel. Its significance rests on its role in Stockton's flour milling, warehousing and shipping trade. The Sperry Flour Company was among the city's largest employers until its mills closed in 1926. At nomination, the building was occupied but showed deterioration.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Turn-of-the-century vernacular industrial building","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied at the time of nomination by a city historic building survey office and a sign manufacturing firm; interior and exterior described as deteriorated from neglect and weather and in need of repair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.191238-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/79000541.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000541/1b6721d881-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000541/1b6721d881-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Aivaliotis","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sperry_Union_Flour_Mill_-_Stockton,_CA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Aivaliotis</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sperry_Union_Flour_Mill_-_Stockton,_CA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861417","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133504947"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-joaquin-county/sperry-union-flour-mill-79000541/"}
