It was the largest theater ever built in Stockton and, on completion, the largest vaudeville house in California. Reviewers also found local architectural significance as an intact example of Spanish/Moorish Revival style, and said it meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Across Main Street from the San Joaquin County Courthouse, this Stockton theater was built in 1930 by the Fox West Coast Theaters chain. Balch & Stanberry of Los Angeles designed it in a late Spanish Colonial Revival style, with a tower carrying the Fox sign and Spanish-Moorish detailing on the facade and in the interior. It has a two-story rotunda, a theater seating about 2,500, and a stage 70 feet high and 90 feet wide. The chain invested over $500,000 and demolished an older theater on the site. Built at the start of the Depression, it spent more than $200,000 locally and was designed to be emptied in two minutes. It was the largest vaudeville house in California until the Oakland Paramount surpassed it a year later. An estimated 22,000 people crowded the streets for the October 1930 opening. Reviewers considered it an intact, richly detailed movie palace, one of few surviving in interior California.","period_of_significance":"1930","architect_builder":"Balch & Stanberry, Los Angeles, CA (architects); Beller Construction Co., Hollywood, CA (contractor)","architectural_style":"Late Spanish Colonial Revival, with Spanish-Moorish-Baroque interior detailing","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Marked occupied and in private ownership, with entertainment as the present use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.165656-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/79000540.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000540/e0ad63fd15-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000540/e0ad63fd15-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Aivaliotis","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fox_California_Theater_-_Stockton,_CA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Aivaliotis</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fox_California_Theater_-_Stockton,_CA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861381","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_California_Theater","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q44883928"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-joaquin-county/fox-california-theater-79000540/"}
