At the time of listing she was moored at Howard Terminal in Oakland, with permanent mooring planned in San Francisco.","why_significant":"She was the first steel-hulled diesel-electric ferryboat to operate on San Francisco Bay, and her design, notably the Sperry electric-hydraulic steering, marked a technological advance. She is one of only 14 surviving ferryboats out of 120 that served the Bay between 1850 and 1939. She also served the auto ferry fleet in the years before the Bay bridges opened.","narrative":"Built in 1926-27 at Alameda, California, the Santa Rosa was a double-ended motor ferry, 251 feet long, designed to carry about 65 cars and 1,200 passengers. She entered service between Sausalito and San Francisco for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and was the first of a six-boat class. She was the first steel-hulled diesel-electric ferry on San Francisco Bay, and her Sperry electric-hydraulic steering was advanced for its time. After consolidation of the auto ferry fleet in 1929, she served several routes until 1939, when the Bay Bridge ended the need for auto ferries. She was sold to the Puget Sound Navigation Company, rebuilt as a single-ended vessel, and renamed Enetai. She ran in Washington waters until 1968. Only 14 of 120 Bay ferries are known to survive. Returned to the Bay, she is being rehabilitated to look much as she did originally, though an enclosed upper passenger deck will remain.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"General Engineering & Drydock Co., Alameda, California","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Vacant during rehabilitation; work under way to reverse the 1941 modifications and restore her close to original appearance, with public access, museum and commercial uses planned.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.280213-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/79000469.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000469/47ec08c714-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000469/47ec08c714-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"NoeHill","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ferryboat_mv_santa_rosa.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">NoeHill</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ferryboat_mv_santa_rosa.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858266","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferryboat_Santa_Rosa","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5445525"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alameda-county/m-v-santa-rosa-79000469/"}
