Abbot and designed by Longfellow, Alden and Harlow. It was the first stone house in the city, and its architects had all worked in H.H. Richardson's office. It is also tied to the Longy School of Music, which has used the house since 1937.","narrative":"Built in 1889 at One Follen Street in Cambridge, this granite house was commissioned by E.H. Abbot, a lawyer and railroad company president who had moved from Milwaukee. It stands on the site of the old Cambridge Arsenal. The Boston firm of Longfellow, Alden and Harlow designed it in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, and all three architects had worked in H.H. Richardson's office. It was the first stone house in Cambridge. The walls are more than a foot thick, self-supporting masonry, and the roof is red Spanish tile, chosen partly for fireproofing. Newspapers of the time called it probably the only fireproof and the most expensive residence in the city. The interior is finished largely in oak, walnut and butternut paneling. The Longy School of Music bought the house in 1937 and still uses it. In 1968 the school added the Edward Pickman Concert Hall and library, designed by Huygens and Tappe, Inc., which echoes the house's paneling and belt courses.","period_of_significance":"1889","architect_builder":"Longfellow, Alden and Harlow","architectural_style":"Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":[],"status_note":"In adaptive use as the Longy School of Music since 1937; a 1968 concert hall and library addition is attached at the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.330007-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7960/63796017/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/79000354.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000354/55d09f6a35-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000354/55d09f6a35-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_Abbot_House_-_1_Follen_Street,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4061.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_Abbot_House_-_1_Follen_Street,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4061.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796017","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Abbot_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5346190"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/abbot-edwin-house-79000354/"}
