Its 1880s remodeling gave it Victorian features not usually found in East Amherst. The form argues it retains integrity of design, location, setting, materials and association despite its deterioration.","narrative":"Built in 1840 at the corner of Main and Salem Streets in East Amherst, this two-story brick house began as a Greek Revival residence for Ithmar Conkey, a lawyer who served as Justice of the Peace, County Commissioner and Probate Court judge. Robert Cutler was the builder. After Conkey died in 1862, the property passed to Abiel Stevens in 1868. His son Albert, who prospered in the railroad business through a family connection to Union Pacific president Sidney Dillon, remodeled the house in the 1880s. The work added a bracketed mansard roof with arched dormers, a rear ell, a bay window and a wraparound verandah, turning it into a Second Empire home. The house sits on about two acres behind a decorative cast iron fence. Its cornice and slate roof are badly deteriorated, and openings were boarded with plywood, but plans called for rehabilitation. The combination of its architecture and its ties to political and industrial families led to its listing.","period_of_significance":"1840; 1879-1889","architect_builder":"Robert Cutler","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, remodeled in Second Empire style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as deteriorated, with windows and door sealed with plywood; the form states the 1977 purchaser plans restoration for offices and an apartment.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.497177-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/7954/63795463/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/79000352.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000352/5c544a5487-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000352/5c544a5487-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Conkey-Stevens_House,_Amherst_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Conkey-Stevens_House,_Amherst_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86001408","name":"East Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/east-village-historic-district-86001408/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795463","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conkey-Stevens_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5161209"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampshire-county/conkey-stevens-house-79000352/"}
