Built in 1877 for the Alethian Lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows and rebuilt in 1895 after a fire.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the hall reflects the nineteenth century fraternal organization movement and the industrial and commercial growth of Shelburne Falls. It is described as a unique example of balloon frame commercial Victorian architecture in the town, with an unmatched ceremonial ballroom and a facade serving as a visual landmark. Its ground-floor shops also illustrate the retail trade that made the village a market center.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of State and Clement Streets, near the iron bridge over the Deerfield River, this three-story balloon frame building anchors the west end of the Buckland side of Shelburne Falls. The Alethian Lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows built it after an 1876 fire destroyed much of the neighborhood, and it was dedicated in 1877. Another fire in 1895 partly destroyed it, and it was rebuilt in its present form. Clapboard siding, paneled pilasters, bracketed cornices and two Palladian windows mark the facade, while the interior includes fluted cast iron columns and a ceremonial ballroom. The lodge owned the hall until 1962, and its ground-floor stores hosted clothing and food merchants. The building reflects the village's industrial boom and the civic role of fraternal orders. It has had only two owners, so few physical changes have occurred since 1895.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Balloon frame commercial Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair and largely unaltered; the form notes only removal of the Odd Fellows insignia and remodeled store interiors since 1895. Ground floors historically housed retail businesses, including a market.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.060695-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7951/63795135/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/79000345.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000345/2ba3a4c8ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000345/2ba3a4c8ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BucklandMA_OddfellowsHall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BucklandMA_OddfellowsHall.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795135","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odd_Fellows%27_Hall_(Buckland,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7077323"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/franklin-county/odd-fellows-hall-79000345/"}
