With its rich brick detail and deep bracketed cornice, it is described as one of the finest examples of its type in the state and one of the earliest surviving fire stations. Local newspapers of the time praised it as a model engine house.","narrative":"Built in 1873, the Peabody Central Fire Station at 41 Lowell Street is a two and a half story red brick building with granite trim, a mansard roof and a rear hose tower. Salem architects Bruce and Copeland designed it, Charles Folsom served as contractor and Samuel Trask as mason. Town meeting appropriated $31,000 for construction on the recommendation of a building committee of local citizens. The facade is dominated by two jerkin-headed cross gables with round windows in granite frames, and the cornice is supported by modillions and decorative brickwork. The first floor originally held two steam fire engines, a hook and ladder truck and hose carriages, with stalls for six horses in the rear ell. A one-story ell for equipment was added in 1921. Local newspapers called the building remarkably fine and a model engine house. It is considered one of the finest and earliest surviving fire stations of its type in Massachusetts, and it still serves downtown Peabody as a fire station.","period_of_significance":"1873","architect_builder":"Bruce & Copeland (architects); Charles Folsom, contractor; Samuel Trask, mason","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains in use as a fire station serving downtown Peabody; rated good condition, with a one-story ell added to the west in 1921.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.497768-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7948/63794848/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/79000344.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000344/6e6c9df281-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000344/6e6c9df281-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peabody_Central_Fire_Station,_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peabody_Central_Fire_Station,_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794848","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peabody_Central_Fire_Station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7157223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/peabody-central-fire-station-79000344/"}
