It also retains its architectural integrity despite a rear addition, appearing nearly identical to its illustration in the 1874 county atlas.","narrative":"Set on a semi-rural road southwest of Peninsula in Boston Township, this one-and-one-half-story Gothic Revival farmhouse was built about 1854 for Allen Welton. It has board and batten siding, a steeply pitched gable roof with a double lancet window, a tooled sandstone foundation and a central entrance with a flattened Gothic arch molding. A 1950 remodeling added a long rear wing in matching materials, yet the house still closely resembles its illustration in the 1874 county atlas. Welton, born in Vermont in 1809, came to Ohio from New York and built up a farm of 284 acres. He became a leading dairyman, starting the first cheese factory in Summit County and later operating another at Bath. He also served as county commissioner and township trustee and founded the Congregational Sunday school. The property includes a bank barn and sits among sixty-two acres of field and woods. Its association with a pioneer Western Reserve dairyman is the main reason for its recognition.","period_of_significance":"c. 1854","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, occupied as a private residence; remodeled in 1950 with a long rear addition designed by Firestone & Cassidy, Architects, of Akron.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:11.969168-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79000314.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000314/2a5721a8f5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000314/2a5721a8f5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"National Park Service","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allen_Welton_House_NPS.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">National Park Service</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allen_Welton_House_NPS.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85001123","name":"Valley Railway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/valley-railway-historic-district-85001123/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991485","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q96742865"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/summit-county/welton-allen-house-79000314/"}
