It is a standard mitered-gate lock with a rectangular chamber 90 feet long and 15 feet wide. The walls are cut stone, partly faced with concrete added around 1905 as a stop-gap repair. Both gates are gone, and the canal is dry at this location. A secluded private road that once served as the canal towpath leads to the site, and a sewage treatment plant stands nearby. The Ohio & Erie Canal connected Lake Erie at Cleveland with the Ohio River at Portsmouth and was completed in 1832. For about thirty years it strongly influenced rising commerce, manufacturing and population in Ohio. The section between Akron and Cleveland opened July 4, 1827, descending 395 feet through 41 locks over 35 miles. This lock is one of those structures.","period_of_significance":"1825-1827","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair.
