Much of its delicate classical ornamentation survives despite numerous alterations. It is also tied to the early history of trade along the Cuyahoga River.","narrative":"Built in 1825 or 1826 by James \"Jim\" Brown, this two-story frame building in the village of Boston, Summit County, began as a store-house on the west side of the Cuyahoga River, where Brown traded with William G. Taylor of Cleveland and also kept a tavern. Several years later Brown sold his goods, moved the building across a bridge to the east side of the river and refitted it as a hotel. He sold it to Henry Wadhams in the winter of 1837-38. The Federal-style building has an unusual rhomboid plan, an ashlar stone foundation, clapboard siding and a gable roof. Pilasters divide it into three by four bays, and an elliptical fanlight highlights the pediment. An attempt at restoration removed the pilasters and replaced the siding on the west elevation, but much classical ornamentation remains. It stands beside the dry Ohio Canal bed, recalling its function as a hotel for canal travelers. The building is vacant and in poor exterior condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"James (\"Jim\") Brown, builder","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant, in poor exterior condition, and described as altered and moved; a restoration attempt removed pilasters from the west elevation.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.880297-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79000300.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000300/3a76c9db1c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000300/3a76c9db1c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Pi3.124","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cuyahoga_Valley_National_Park_Boston_Store_Visitor_Center.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pi3.124</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cuyahoga_Valley_National_Park_Boston_Store_Visitor_Center.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"92001490","name":"Boston Mills Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/boston-mills-historic-district-92001490/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986298","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Land_and_Manufacturing_Company_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q96781558"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/summit-county/brown-jim-tavern-79000300/"}
