It was built in 1864 by farmer John Packard.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant for its link to the history of Independence, a predominantly rural community until recent times. It is one of the few brick farmhouses in the Cuyahoga Valley, and its brick dentil cornice is especially unusual. The house also retains a great deal of historical and architectural integrity.","narrative":"Perched on the western rim of the Cuyahoga River Valley in Independence, Ohio, this small brick farmhouse dates to 1864, when farmer John Packard built it. It is a one-and-one-half-story rectangle with a six-bay facade, gable roof, low stone foundation and double-hung windows with dressed stone sills and lintels. Its most distinctive feature is a brick dentil cornice that follows the gable rake on both front and rear. Packard sold the farm in 1868 to France X. Doubler, whose family kept it for generations, adding a frame kitchen about 1890, a large barn in 1901 and bungalow-style porches in 1924. The house is considered important as one of the few brick farmhouses in the Cuyahoga Valley and for illustrating Independence when it was largely agricultural. Open fields still surround it, and it retains much of its original character inside and out.","period_of_significance":"1864","architect_builder":"John Packard (builder, per the statement of significance)","architectural_style":"Traditional brick farmhouse with Greek Revival overtones","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and occupied as a private residence; the surrounding farmland lies fallow.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.309207-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79000294.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000294/8669ec6b47-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000294/8669ec6b47-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"National Park Service","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Packard-Doubler_House_NPS.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">National Park Service</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Packard-Doubler_House_NPS.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85001123","name":"Valley Railway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/valley-railway-historic-district-85001123/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987335","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q86734489"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/packard-doubler-house-79000294/"}
