It is also architecturally notable as a \"saltbox\" form, common in New England but rarely found in northeast Ohio. Only half the saltbox form appears, since the north wall has a standard gable to accommodate the ell.","narrative":"Built in 1841, this one-and-one-half-story farmhouse on Brecksville Road was the home of William Burt, who emigrated from Massachusetts to Brecksville around 1833. The braced-frame house has clapboard siding, a sandstone foundation, a five-bay facade and a Greek Revival central entrance with narrow pilasters. Seen from the southwest it takes the form of a New England \"saltbox,\" a type rarely found in this part of Ohio, though only half the form appears because the north side has a standard gable above a rear ell. Burt farmed here with his wife Thankful until their deaths in 1882 and 1883, and their son Charles stayed on the farm until 1910. In 1924 the property was sold to the Cleveland Metropolitan Park District while it was establishing the Brecksville Reservation. The district has used the house as a ranger residence. Alterations include changed windows, a porch and an enlarged ell.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"William Burt (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the Cleveland Metropolitan Park District and used as a residence for park rangers; condition listed as good, with numerous alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:11.888696-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79000286.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000286/974a054bb6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79000286/974a054bb6-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Burt_House_site.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Burt_House_site.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987677","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q96782277"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/burt-william-house-79000286/"}
