Bowen Country Club, a summer camp. It is now Bowen Park, owned by the Waukegan Park District.","why_significant":"The site was a summer retreat for underprivileged children and adults of the Hull House Association, the Chicago settlement house founded by Jane Addams and others. It was funded largely by Louise DeKoven Bowen in memory of her husband. It has also stayed largely intact, with woods and a ravine that show how Waukegan once looked.","narrative":"Bowen Park, a 60-acre tract along Sheridan Road in northeast Waukegan, began as a farm site in 1843 and became the Joseph T. Bowen Country Club in 1911. Louise DeKoven Bowen and Jane Addams bought the land that year as a permanent summer camp for children of the Hull House Association, naming it in memory of Mrs. Bowen's late husband. Earlier owners included Chicago mayor John Charles Haines, who added to the original farmhouse in the 1870s, and Waukegan mayor Fred W. Buck. Hull House built residential cottages, a dining hall, a recreation hall, an infirmary, a pool and other facilities, many funded by trustees and donors. Several wood-frame buildings survive, including the Haines Farmhouse, Lilac Cottage, the garages, Rosenwald Cottage, Pelham Cottage and Goodfellow Hall. The site keeps wooded areas and a ravine, and it has been owned by the Waukegan Park District as a recreational and educational park.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Pond & Pond, Architects (The Commons, 1912); Anderson & Tichnor/Ticknor, Architects (Lilac Cottage and Garages, 1928)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the Waukegan Park District and in use as a public park, in good condition and altered; several older cottages and camp buildings have been removed because of deterioration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.63156-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/8933/28893390/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/78003400.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003400/badf186339-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003400/badf186339-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Raas08","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waukegan_Historical_Society_Haines_House_(located_on_the_former_Bowen_Country_Club_land).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Raas08</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waukegan_Historical_Society_Haines_House_(located_on_the_former_Bowen_Country_Club_land).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893390","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowen_Park_(Waukegan)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16985027"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/lake-county/bowen-joseph-t-country-club-78003400/"}
