A full-length gallery supported by Doric columns runs across the south-facing front. The central door is flanked by windows with four-over-four lights, and an end gable extends over two bays of the main facade. The roof is wood shakes with a metal porch roof, and rear additions have been made. Dr. C. A. Grimes built the home for his new bride, Laura Madison Grimes. He received his medical degree from Meharry in Nashville and met Laura while she was studying at Fisk. He became the first Black doctor in Bastrop and practiced there for more than 30 years, while Laura worked as a school teacher. The house stands across the street from a primary school.
