It was built in the 1890s for farmer-inventor John Blue.","why_significant":"The house was the residence of John Blue (1861-1935), whose research and patented inventions of agricultural machinery, including the Rex guano fertilizer distributor and the John Blue cotton planter, helped revitalize the cotton economy of the South. It is also described as one of the finest examples of late nineteenth century architecture in Scotland County, with richly ornamented interior and exterior woodwork.","narrative":"Just west of Laurinburg, this two-story frame house was built in the 1890s for John Blue, a Scotland County farmer who had little formal education but a gift for invention. A lace-like two-tier porch of turned posts, spindle frieze and sawnwork wraps the whole house, and a three-story octagonal tower with a conical spire marks the entrance. Inside, the woodwork is richly carved and molded, with grooved wainscoting, varied mantels and stained glass in the doors. Local tradition says Blue designed the house and carried out much of the ornament himself. His cotton stalk cutter, Rex guano fertilizer distributor and cotton planter were used widely across the cotton-growing South, and his repair shop grew into a manufacturing plant. The house was listed for its link to Blue and for its architecture. Scotland County received it in 1976, and plans called for restoration and an agricultural heritage center.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"John Blue (said by local tradition to have designed the house and done much of the work himself)","architectural_style":"Late nineteenth century Victorian frame house with Greek cross plan","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Owned by Scotland County since 1976 and in fair condition; formerly rented to several families. The county's historic properties commission planned restoration and an educational/museum use, and a relocated log house on the site was undergoing restoration.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.804996-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/7222/47722225/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/78003192.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003192/8263eb4841-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003192/8263eb4841-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Corydjhughes","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Blue_House_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Corydjhughes</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Blue_House_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722225","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Blue_House_(Laurinburg,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6222271"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/scotland-county/blue-john-house-78003192/"}
