Its granite construction exemplifies the industry on which the town's growth was based. It is also linked to the George and Davidson families, who were important to the town's early development.","narrative":"Built in 1895 on Main Street in Lithonia, this two-story building has granite bearing walls 19 to 24 inches thick, a hip roof and, since about 1906, a double veranda with square twin columns. It began as a private school on land donated by Benjamin Franklin George, operating before the town had a public school system and closing around 1906. John Keay Davidson, Sr., a Scottish-born quarry owner, then converted it into the Auto Rest Hotel to house stonemasons brought from Scotland during a local housing shortage. About 1917 J.H. Malone bought it, added plumbing and electricity, and made it a family home. Two rear bathroom wings were added in about 1918 and 1962, while the hotel room layout and hand-painted room numbers survive. The granite reflects the quarrying industry that gave Lithonia its name and its economy, and the building's successive uses connect it to the town's educational, economic and social development.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stone vernacular structure (granite bearing wall with hip roof)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; the building has remained a private residence of the Malone family, with interior hotel room divisions largely intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.277568-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/78003097.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003097/ba59393213-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003097/ba59393213-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Tim Farley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Seminary_Lithonia_Georgia_Front_View.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Farley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Seminary_Lithonia_Georgia_Front_View.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"16000639","name":"Lithonia Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/lithonia-historic-district-16000639/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207805","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seminary_(Lithonia,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55886232"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/dekalb-county/seminary-the-78003097/"}
