The house is believed by the form to date from circa 1794, built by Lewis Smalley.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the property is a well preserved and little altered example of early architecture in the Great Loop area, with unusual corner fireplaces and a fine stone barn. It also cites Civil War inscriptions carved in the barn by Union cavalry stationed there to guard the Pennsylvania Railroad, and Smalley's Revolutionary War military service.","narrative":"Built of native stone in the Great Loop area of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, the two and one half story Lewis Smalley house is among the oldest in the county, with a date of around 1794 given for its construction. It is three bays wide, has a gable tin roof, and retains its original interior features, including stone arched corner fireplaces that still function, handhewn beams, solid plank doors with original hardware, and hemlock floors. Beside it stands a stone bank barn measuring forty-five by ninety feet, with stables for fifty head of livestock and a threshing floor grainery. Its handhewn, mortised and pegged framing and limestone sills are notable, as are carved inscriptions left by earlier owners and by Union troops quartered there during the Civil War. Smalley had served in the Cumberland Militia during the Revolutionary War and acquired the property in 1797. The site lay on an important cross-state transportation route, which is why Union cavalry were stationed there to guard the railroad against Confederate raiders.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"Lewis Smalley","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"The interior is described as being in excellent condition, with the house in good condition overall.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.671827-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/78003088.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003088/4349f73ed3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003088/4349f73ed3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lewis_Smalley_Homestead_house.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lewis_Smalley_Homestead_house.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71994465","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Smalley_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6537054"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/huntingdon-county/smalley-lewis-homestead-78003088/"}
