It is probably the only double-intersection Whipple-type truss in Virginia. Its 134-foot length is also very unusual for a single-span structure.","narrative":"Linville Creek Bridge carries State Route 1421 over Linville Creek just south of Broadway in Rockingham County, Virginia. Built in 1898 by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company, it is a single-span metal truss 133 feet 4 inches long. The design is a double-intersection Whipple type, in effect a hybrid that draws on structural aspects of both the double-intersection Pratt and Warren trusses. The top chords and end posts are paired upright channels joined by cover plates and lacing bars, and the posts are paired back-to-back angles with triple rectilinear eye bars. The truss is very tall, about 24 feet, compared with its 13-foot width, which gives it a narrow, attenuated look. It rests on a coursed limestone substructure of random-tooled ashlar and has simple wooden side railings. The bridge is considered probably the only double-intersection Whipple-type truss in Virginia, and its length is unusual for a single span. A state engineering rating gave it 21.0 of a possible 27.0 points.","period_of_significance":"1898","architect_builder":"Wrought Iron Bridge Company","architectural_style":"Double-intersection Whipple-type truss (hybrid of double-intersection Pratt and Warren)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unaltered and owned by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation; used for transportation.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.590682-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/6835/41683511/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/78003042.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003042/d8b0a2acfa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003042/d8b0a2acfa-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Rob Tucher, Photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Linville_Creek_Bridge,_Spanning_Linville_Creek_at_State_Route_1421,_Broadway_vicinity_(Rockingham_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rob Tucher, Photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Linville_Creek_Bridge,_Spanning_Linville_Creek_at_State_Route_1421,_Broadway_vicinity_(Rockingham_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683511","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linville_Creek_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15242434"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rockingham-county/linville-creek-bridge-78003042/"}
