Probably built around the middle of the 18th century by Christopher Robinson III, it began as an L-shaped, story-and-a-half dwelling with clipped gables, a five-bay main block and a two-bay ell, all laid in Flemish bond with glazed headers. In the early 19th century the roofs were changed to gambrels, and around the middle of the century the main block was raised to two full stories. The interior keeps Federal and Greek Revival mantels, an open-well stair and an original winder stair in the ell. The house matters as the work of the Robinson family, prominent in colonial Virginia, and as a record of how planters' houses were enlarged and restyled over about a century. A family cemetery near the house includes a 1715 slab marker.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"Probably Christopher Robinson III (1705-1768)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition; the form marks it as occupied and as a private residence, and it remains in the hands of the Duer family.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.585833-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/6819/41681972/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/78003030.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003030/a433275816-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003030/a433275816-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hewick_House,_State_Routes_615_%26_602_vicinity,_Urbanna_vicinity_(Middlesex_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hewick_House,_State_Routes_615_%26_602_vicinity,_Urbanna_vicinity_(Middlesex_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100005837","name":"Occupacia-Rappahannock Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/occupacia-rappahannock-rural-historic-district-100005837/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681972","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hewick","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712526"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/middlesex-county/hewick-78003030/"}
