It was built ca. 1820-25 for the Farmer family.","why_significant":"The nomination cites its unusual variant of the standard I-house plan, handsome brickwork, elaborate interior trim and remnants of original painted decoration. A winder stair in the east room gives sole access to a separate second-floor chamber. It is also described as representative of a house type built by comfortably situated Middle Virginia planters in the early 19th century.","narrative":"Set among the rolling farmlands of western Amelia County, this two-story frame house was built around 1820-25 by the Farmer family. It follows the I-house form: five bays wide, a single room deep, with a central stair passage, raised on a high Flemish-bond brick basement. Brick end chimneys, beaded weatherboards and an original pedimented south porch with slender piers add to its character. Inside, the original trim survives, including reeded wainscoting, an open-string stair and finely detailed mantels, with the west room the most elaborate. Its plan differs from the standard in a second, winder stair in the east room that serves a completely separate upstairs chamber. Land tax records suggest Nelson Farmer, who inherited the land from his brother Charles in 1822, completed the house and outbuildings by 1825. A smokehouse and a barn also remain. The property is notable as a well-preserved example of a house type common among Virginia planters of moderate means.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"I-house (vernacular, early 19th century)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence; two early outbuildings, a smokehouse and a barn, survive.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.831397-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/6795/41679500/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/78003004.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003004/19aef1837f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78003004/19aef1837f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Farmer_House_property_entrance.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Farmer_House_property_entrance.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679500","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer_House_(Deatonville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712310"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/amelia-county/farmer-house-78003004/"}
