They are the most imposing structures in the county and among its few surviving nineteenth-century buildings. Reviewers also noted their value as late nineteenth-century civic architecture and as symbols of the county's growth.","narrative":"Throckmorton's county government has long been centered on two sandstone buildings: a courthouse on the Public Square and a jail near Chestnut Street. The courthouse was built in 1890-91, when the county had only 124 inhabitants, to replace a frame and clapboard shelter. Martin, Byrnes and Johnston drew the plans, and J.L. Dewees and Jacob Rath built it for $16,415. Its quarry-faced ashlar walls, cut-stone quoins and arches, and galvanized iron cornice are notable, and the interior keeps a stamped metal ceiling over the corridors. A west wing was added and the original tower was replaced by a modest hipped feature. The jail followed in 1893, built by the Pauly Jail Building and Manufacturing Company of St. Louis for $13,000. It has brown sandstone walls, segmental arches, a stepped parapet and a cell floor above the sheriff's quarters. Both are among the few surviving nineteenth-century buildings in the county and remain in public use.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Martin, Byrnes & Johnston (courthouse plans); J.L.
