It began about 1873 as a one-story dog-trot house built by local builder William Trawick and was enlarged in 1891.","why_significant":"The house is an important Granbury example of the 'Symmetrical Victorian' style, which blends Greek Revival massing with Victorian detail. It shows the change from a simple frontier dog-trot house to a larger residence. It is also tied to three Hood County sheriffs who lived there (A. J. Wright, J. F. Henderson and C. M. Duncan) and is the work of area builder William Trawick.","narrative":"Located on about two acres at 703 Spring Street in Granbury, this limestone house began around 1873 as a one-story dog-trot dwelling, two large rooms divided by an open breezeway. Local builder William Trawick built it of locally quarried limestone for A. J. Wright, a Hood County sheriff. In 1891 new owner J. F. Henderson added a second story in matching hand-hewn stone, enclosed the breezeway, and built a wooden double gallery with jigsawed trim, giving the house a clipped-gable roof and tall narrow windows. Henderson and later owner C. M. Duncan also served as county sheriffs. Duncan modernized the house after 1928 with electricity, plumbing and a metal roof. From 1969 his heirs restored it toward the 1891 look, rebuilding the double veranda and adding a rear wing of salvaged limestone. The house is valued as a local example of Symmetrical Victorian architecture, which combines Greek Revival massing with Victorian detail, and as the work of an area builder.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"William Trawick","architectural_style":"Symmetrical Victorian (transitional between Greek Revival and Victorian)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored toward its 1891 appearance beginning in 1969; the house is to remain a private residence.
