Its restoration after years of neglect became an important project in Marshall's preservation movement.","narrative":"Hagerty House, at 505 East Rusk Street in Marshall, Texas, is a two-story Victorian brick residence completed in 1889. Thomas Higgins built it for William P. Hagerty, personal engineer to Texas and Pacific Railroad president George J. Gould, using skilled craftsmen from the railroad. It was the first solid brick house in Marshall, a town where most homes were wood-framed, and the first to show Italianate design. That style appears in the balanced five-bay front, large eave brackets and low-pitched roof. Inside, twin parlors flank a central stairwell, with walnut woodwork, shutters and stencilled canvas ceilings. The house was vacated in 1967 and deteriorated, and many townspeople wanted it demolished. A local physician bought it in 1972 and began a restoration that his son continued. The exterior now looks much as it originally did, apart from the lost front gallery and portico. The house is valued mainly for its architecture and as a landmark of local preservation.","period_of_significance":"1889","architect_builder":"Thomas Higgins","architectural_style":"Victorian Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored to its original appearance except for the missing front gallery and portico; occupied as a private residence with antique furnishings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.924289-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/9724/40972499/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/78002951.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002951/465f97b9aa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002951/465f97b9aa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hagerty1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hagerty1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972499","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagerty_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30623158"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/harrison-county/hagerty-house-78002951/"}
