It is also significant for its long association with the Devotions, a locally prominent Huguenot family active in the town's educational, governmental and religious affairs in the 17th and 18th centuries.","narrative":"Edward Devotion House is a small, gambrel-roofed Colonial dwelling at 347 Harvard Street in Brookline, built around 1745 by Solomon Hill, the adopted son of Edward Devotion Jr. It is clapboarded, has a central chimney and an asymmetrical three-bay south facade with a pedimented door. A rear lean-to and a Beverly jog were added between about 1775 and 1800. Much original interior woodwork survives, including paneled fireplace walls, period hinges, and a molded stair handrail. The house was repaired in 1891 under architect William G. Preston when the neighboring Edward Devotion School was built with funds from Devotion's will, and again in 1908. It is regarded as the finest mid-18th century Colonial house left in Brookline. It also recalls the Devotions, a Huguenot family prominent in the town's civic and church life. Now town-owned, it serves as a museum displaying family heirlooms and portraits, and the annual reenactment of William Dawes' 1775 ride is linked to it.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"Solomon Hill","architectural_style":"Colonial (mid-18th century)","criteria":[],"status_note":"In good condition; owned by the Town of Brookline and used as a museum open to the public two days a week, with the curators living in the house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.719248-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7962/63796230/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/78002835.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002835/95819f87cb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002835/95819f87cb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_EdwardDevotionHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrooklineMA_EdwardDevotionHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796230","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Devotion_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5342579"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/devotion-edward-house-78002835/"}
