It was altered around 1884 and again at the end of the nineteenth century.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant as the home of Philipsburg's founder and as a landmark in the development of the town and its lumbering and iron industries. Its original Georgian-style plan and interior woodwork are also cited as retained features.","narrative":"Begun in 1813 by Hardman Philips, founder of Philipsburg, this house on Presque Isle and Fourth Streets was first built as a two and a half story Georgian house with a gable roof. Around 1884 a carriage porch, a bay addition and a gambrel roof with dormers created a full third story, and a two story wing was added at the end of the nineteenth century. The house retains much of its original woodwork and hardware and has 13 fireplaces. Philips also built a forge on Cold Stream in 1817 and a wood-screw factory in 1821, reported as the first in the United States. Later owners, the Morgan, Hale and Company, operated the lumbering and forge enterprises and built the Tyrone and Clearfield Railroad. Its association with the town's founding and its industrial history account for its listing.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Hardman Philips (builder/architect)","architectural_style":"Georgian style (original house); later gambrel roof alterations","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Document describes the house as in good condition with an altered exterior and some non-working fireplaces; current use not stated beyond the 1978 description of rooms.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.398173-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/78002364.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002364/c582a8d778-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002364/c582a8d778-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hardman_Philips_House_Philipsburg_PA_Sep_12.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hardman_Philips_House_Philipsburg_PA_Sep_12.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99000881","name":"Philipsburg Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/philipsburg-historic-district-99000881/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997572","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardman_Philips_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5656260"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/centre-county/philips-hardman-house-78002364/"}
