It also cites the surviving 18th-century interior features, including beamed ceilings, a large walk-in stone fireplace and box stairway, together with the 1854 commercial addition built by Moses Van Horn.","narrative":"Eagle Tavern is a stone building in Upper Makefield Township, south of New Hope in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Its earliest section dates from the early eighteenth century and has a steep roof, a stone fireplace covering an entire wall, massive hand-hewn beams and a box-form winding stair. In 1854 Moses Van Horn, a local businessman, added a larger three-bay section for commercial use; its datestone reads \"M. H. & R. V. H. 1854.\" Until the end of the nineteenth century the addition housed a hotel, store, post office and voting headquarters for the township, and its third floor was a ballroom. In 1813 James Vance was licensed to run a tavern on the main road between Newtown and New Hope, and the tavern was given the name Spread Eagle by 1820. The building is significant for its long service as a community meeting place and for its surviving original interior features. Later alterations, including partitioned bedrooms on the upper floors, were made with care for the original character.","period_of_significance":"1800-1854","architect_builder":"Moses Van Horn (builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Presently a private residence; the garage on the west end is a recent addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.089981-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/78002353.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002353/ffe18c3d16-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002353/ffe18c3d16-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Shuvaev","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eagle_Tavern,_Upper_Makefield_PA_05.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Shuvaev</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eagle_Tavern,_Upper_Makefield_PA_05.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996718","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Tavern_(Upper_Makefield_Township,_Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5325272"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/bucks-county/eagle-tavern-78002353/"}
