Bair. It is a two-story building with a bellcast mansard roof forming a third story.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of early Victorian architecture with Italianate and Eastlake elements, and an exquisite mid-19th century farm house with unusually fine interior and exterior detailing. It is also tied to the Bair family, early settlers and prominent farmers in Plain Township.","narrative":"Built in 1869 north of Canton, this brick farmhouse was the home of Jacob H. Bair, a Plain Township farmer born in 1814. It rests on a sandstone foundation and rises two stories under a bellcast mansard roof that adds a third. The five-bay front has a projecting central entrance with paneled double doors, segmental brick arches over first-floor openings, round-arched upper windows, and a one-story porch with brackets and dentils. Inside, handcarved maple and walnut stair railings and walnut or butternut library woodwork survive, along with a separate-stair \"tramp room\" once used for overnight travelers. The Bair family were among the township's first settlers and operated several important farms; by 1870 Jacob Bair's real estate was valued at $25,000. A county history later called the place one of the really valuable properties in the township. Isaac Markley bought the farm in 1884. The house is recognized as a fine mid-19th century farmhouse with Italianate and Eastlake details.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Victorian with Italianate and Eastlake elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Private residence in excellent condition; interior restored with few structural changes, and the original outbuildings on the former 160-acre estate are gone.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.152488-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002194.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002194/c784dcef84-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002194/c784dcef84-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jacob_H._Bair_House_(Canton,_OH).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jacob_H._Bair_House_(Canton,_OH).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991331","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138680151"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/bair-jacob-h-house-78002194/"}
