It includes a brick house, summer kitchen, barn, carriage house, springhouse, seed barn and granary on a 5-acre site.","why_significant":"The complex is described as an excellent collection of mid-19th century agricultural structures and one of the most complete farm complexes in southwest Ohio. The house has an excellent early interior and good proportions, and repeated small gables and cupolas give the property visual unity. It is listed under agriculture and architecture.","narrative":"This five-acre farm on the south side of National Road, east of New Carlisle, preserves a nearly complete set of agricultural buildings from about 1857. William Baumgardner, a prosperous farmer whose family came from Pennsylvania in 1835, built the complex. The two-story brick house is T-shaped, with a three-bay facade, sidelights and transom at the entrance, and a bracketed porch. Behind it stand a frame summer kitchen with an exterior bake oven, a large barn, a carriage house, a brick springhouse with diamond-pattern vents, a seed barn and a granary. All remain in their original locations. Small gables and cupolas repeat across the buildings and tie them together visually. Some outbuildings are in poor condition, and the summer kitchen was sided and altered in 1975. The property was listed because it is one of the most complete mid-19th century farm complexes in southwest Ohio. David Mann bought it around 1870, and his family held it until the 1940s.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1857","architect_builder":"William Baumgardner","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"House in good repair; outbuildings not well preserved, with the granary very dilapidated and the summer kitchen altered by siding in 1975. Form lists the property as occupied private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.328299-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002141.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002141/ccf7701ce3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002141/ccf7701ce3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Baumgardner_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Baumgardner_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990289","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Baumgardner_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716948"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/miami-county/baumgardner-william-house-and-farm-buildings-78002141/"}
