Its elaborate main entrance, recessed built-in cabinets and original fireplaces are cited as outstanding features. It was also an early Greek Revival restoration that served as a model for restoring other area landmarks.","narrative":"Built in 1839 on Detroit Road in Sheffield, Lorain County, this two-story wood frame house was designed in the Greek Revival style and built by Ezra Jackson of nearby Avon. It was home to Milton Garfield, who arrived in Sheffield Township from Massachusetts in 1816 and ran a large, prosperous farm. The T-shaped house has a five-bay front, double-hung windows with original shutters, and a central entrance that blends Greek and Federal details beneath four freestanding Tuscan columns. Inside, a central hall with an open stairway leads to a main parlor with a large fireplace, a Dutch oven and recessed built-in cabinets. When finished, it was among the largest residences in the area. Garfield descendants occupied it until the 1930s, when it was restored with very few changes. It later served as a model for restoring other nearby historic houses. A late nineteenth-century barn remains on the property.","period_of_significance":"1839","architect_builder":"Ezra Jackson","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, occupied as a private residence; restored in the 1930s with few changes.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.37152-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002117.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002117/df06773c46-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002117/df06773c46-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Milton_Garfield_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Milton_Garfield_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989837","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138515082"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lorain-county/garfield-milton-house-78002117/"}
