It is the only surviving building of the original farmstead.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of rural Federal architecture in Licking County because of its simple design, quality construction and nearly original condition. Its c. 1820 date also makes it a fairly early frame house for the area. It is tied to David Marple and his son Miles, prominent local farmers.","narrative":"Upland Farm is a Federal-style farmhouse built around 1820 in Newton Township, Licking County, roughly a mile and a quarter north of Chatham. The two-story frame house rests on a stone foundation, has horizontal siding and a gable roof covered in tin, and measures five bays by two. One-story wings flank the main block; the north garage wing was added in 1950. Entrances with transoms sit in the central bays, and the interior woodwork and flooring remain original. David Marple, a Pennsylvania native, bought land here in 1814 and the family lived in a log house until the frame house was finished. He and his son Miles became prominent farmers who controlled much land in northern Newton Township. The property stayed in the family until about 1900 and declined by the 1940s before being rehabilitated. Its simple design, quality construction and nearly original condition make it a notable early rural frame house in the county. The barn, springhouse and summer kitchen are gone.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; described as in excellent condition and carefully rehabilitated, with original interior woodwork and flooring.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.289893-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002102.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002102/3986feec2a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002102/3986feec2a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Upland_Farm_farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Upland_Farm_farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989676","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138460946"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/licking-county/upland-farm-78002102/"}
