It was also the spiritual home of an early United Brethren Bishop. Architecturally, it is an example of a mid-nineteenth century church built by its own members from creek stones.","narrative":"Five Mile Chapel, also known as the Old Stone Church, is a rectangular fieldstone building on Old Five Mile Road in Anderson Township, Hamilton County. Congregation members gathered stones from the creek and cut and set them by hand in 1844. A remodelling in 1896 raised the roof line, added the northwest corner belfry entrance and moved the pulpit to the east side. The slate roof dates to 1902, and hand-blown stained glass fills the windows. A cemetery of about 110 graves wraps around three sides, including a Markley family monument with bas-relief carving by Cincinnati marble cutters. The Markley family donated the land and were leading contributors. The chapel was the first United Brethren church built in Anderson Township and sent the denomination's influence westward and to neighboring communities. The congregation met continuously until 1963. Since the 1970 merger, the building has belonged to the United Methodist Church, which uses it for special services.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Used for special services by the Cherry Grove and Anderson Hills United Methodist Churches; the congregation operated continuously until 1963.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.243863-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002082.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002082/ad8ef7f65b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002082/ad8ef7f65b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Five_Mile_Chapel_in_Anderson_Township.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Five_Mile_Chapel_in_Anderson_Township.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989143","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Brethren_in_Christ_(Cincinnati,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7887541"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/united-brethren-in-christ-78002082/"}
