It was designed by Samual Hannaford and Sons and completed in 1908.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a superb, largely undisturbed example of Beaux Arts design with extensive applied decoration. It was designed by Cincinnati's leading 19th and early 20th century architectural firm. Its theatre is described as an outstanding performance hall with excellent acoustics and the last remaining example of the city's smaller early halls.","narrative":"Built as a memorial to soldiers, sailors, marines and pioneers, this square stone hall at Elm and Grant Streets in Cincinnati was completed in 1908 and dedicated on June 13 of that year. Samual Hannaford and Sons, the city's leading architectural firm of the era, designed it in the Beaux-Arts classical revival style. The facade has a three-bay frontispiece with engaged Corinthian columns and an attic story with statues. Inside are two meeting rooms, a second-floor memorial room and a theatre with 258 orchestra and box seats and 394 balcony seats, no supporting columns and excellent acoustics. Painted plaster, gilded moldings and original chandeliers survive. The building was presented to the Hamilton County Commissioners as trustees, who have made it available mainly to veterans and related groups. Its design and nearly unaltered decoration are the main reasons for its recognition, though a leaking roof has caused water damage.","period_of_significance":"1908","architect_builder":"Samual Hannaford and Sons","architectural_style":"Beaux-Arts classical revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and unaltered, on its original site, but the roof leaks and is progressively deteriorating, damaging plaster walls, cornices, ceilings and wood window frames. Used by veterans and related organizations.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.821332-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002076.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002076/5c46ede84c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002076/5c46ede84c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Attribution required: Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HamiltonCountyMemorial.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Attribution required: Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HamiltonCountyMemorial.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988847","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_County_Memorial_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5644898"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/hamilton-county-memorial-building-78002076/"}
