It was built for William McCracken (1787-1872), an early civic leader who organized the Associate Church, served as county commissioner and helped found the town's first library. Later it passed to the Scott family, who held it until 1977.","narrative":"Built around 1830 at 819 Steubenville Avenue in Cambridge, Ohio, this brick I-house has a two-story ell extending north from the rear. The walls are four courses thick, laid in common bond on a sandstone foundation, and a journal records 59,500 bricks used in construction. The five-bay facade has a Greek Revival-style entrance with transom and sidelights, and the slate gable roof carries inset end chimneys. Inside, six principal rooms each retain a fireplace, and much of the woodwork, including the stair balustrade, is walnut. William McCracken, a Pennsylvania native who arrived in 1809 as the village blacksmith, built the house. He organized the Associate Church in 1822, served as county commissioner from 1819 to 1828 and helped start the town's first library. Elza Scott, who ran a salt works, bought the property in 1873, and his family held it until 1977. It is one of only three settlement-era buildings left in Cambridge and now serves as law offices.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"William McCracken","architectural_style":"Greek Revival-influenced traditional architecture (I-house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and rehabilitated for use as law offices; described as not radically altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.366296-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002071.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002071/76ae6c661c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002071/76ae6c661c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk).","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McCracken_Scott_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk).</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McCracken_Scott_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988800","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138348813"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/guernsey-county/mccracken-scott-house-78002071/"}
