The barn is one of four surviving stone-end barns built along the Olentangy River south of Delaware, probably before 1860, and the only one with a stone farmhouse. Both buildings show careful architectural detailing such as quoins, a recessed entrance and a denticular cornice.","narrative":"Limestone Vale is a farm along the Olentangy River Road, about half a mile southwest of Stratford, Ohio. Its two main buildings, a stone farmhouse and a stone end barn, date to the mid-nineteenth century, around 1850, and have changed little since. The two-story house is T-shaped and built of coursed rubble limestone, with a five-bay facade and a recessed entrance framed by pilasters, sidelights, a transom and a fluted architrave. Cut stone lintels and corner quoins add detail. The bank barn measures roughly 100 by 50 feet and also has cut stone quoins. Daniel Stout, who built the farm, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and his buildings resemble those of southeastern Pennsylvania. The barn is one of four surviving stone-end barns built along the river south of Delaware, probably before 1860, and the only one with a stone farmhouse. The Stout family farmed here until 1972.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date c. 1850)","architect_builder":"Daniel Stout (builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and used as a private residence; the form says it was undergoing careful restoration by the present owners.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:11.885299-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002055.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002055/1e5efaa99e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002055/1e5efaa99e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Limestone_Vale.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Limestone_Vale.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988056","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137759879"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/delaware-county/limestone-vale-78002055/"}
