The Federal-style house dates to 1838 (the form also gives 1836 and 1835) and was remodeled around 1850; the beehive school dates to about 1846.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be the best example near Greenville of an Early Victorian style that grew out of Greek Revival, with a striking site at a bend in the highway. The beehive school was Darke County's first permanent school building. The builder, Abraham Studebaker, and his heirs were prominent in local affairs.","narrative":"Along State Route 49 south of Greenville, Ohio, a brick farmhouse and a small brick schoolhouse sit together near a bend in the road. The house began as a Federal-style structure of 1838 with a central hall plan and a five-bay Flemish bond facade. Around 1850 it was extensively renovated, gaining a central advancing wing and bracketed eaves of Victorian character, along with a Greek Revival entranceway. The nomination calls it the best example of this style near Greenville. Abraham Studebaker, an early pioneer and the first settler of Adams Township, built the original house; he served on the first Board of Darke County Commissioners in 1816 and helped incorporate the Greenville and Miami Railroad. His son George gave the house its present appearance after 1852. The plain brick beehive school, built about 1846, was Darke County's first permanent school building. It was later reused briefly as a temporary school and deeded to the D.A.R. by an heir to the farm.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Abraham Studebaker (builder)","architectural_style":"Early Victorian growing out of Greek Revival, over an earlier Federal structure","criteria":[],"status_note":"Form lists the property as occupied and in private ownership, used as a private residence; the school is currently housing an amateur radio station.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.742136-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/78002053.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002053/0b1ac2a2eb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78002053/0b1ac2a2eb-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beehive_School.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beehive_School.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987979","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studabaker-Scott_House_and_Beehive_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7627524"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/darke-county/studabaker-scott-house-and-beehive-school-78002053/"}
