Andrew Ferguson, with a one-story addition made about 1889.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the house as an outstanding example of vernacular brick architecture. It also argues the house is significant as the residence of Andrew Ferguson, an early settler and prominent county figure who worked on the Ohio Erie Canal, served as county commissioner and as a state legislator, and helped set up a weekly newspaper.","narrative":"Built around 1840 east of West Lafayette in Coshocton County, Ohio, this L-shaped brick house was the home of Col. Andrew Ferguson. It is laid in common bond on a sandstone foundation, with a five-bay front, six-over-six windows with stone lintels, a slate gable roof, and a cherry entrance door with transom and sidelights. A one-story addition with an arcaded porch was added about 1889. Inside are fourteen rooms, original pine trim, five fireplaces, and a central hall with a cherry balustrade said to have been carved by Ferguson. Ferguson was born in Ireland in 1795 and settled in Lafayette Township around 1825. He served as a land contractor for the Ohio Erie Canal, as county commissioner from 1833 to 1838, and in the state legislature in 1850-1851. He once owned more than five hundred acres. The house stayed in the family until 1910 and is valued as brick vernacular architecture and as a reminder of an early local leader.","period_of_significance":"c. 1840","architect_builder":"Andrew Ferguson","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"The nomination says the current owner has begun a careful restoration of the interior and exterior.
