Built about 1861 by Hugh T. Rinehart.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house keeps much of its original character, especially its plain interior with walnut woodwork, a fireplace and ladder-style stairs. It is also tied to Hugh T. Rinehart, an early settler and county commissioner. The interior reflects Virginia influence, unusual among the German settlers' homes in the area. Significance is evaluated at the local level.","narrative":"Set on a small hill at the corner of State Route 67 and Wrestle Creek Road, this farmhouse near Uniopolis was built about 1861 by Hugh T. Rinehart. It is a simple rectangular 1 1/2-story building of common bond brick with a tin gable roof, stone lintels and sills, and a later porch with inscribed sandstone columns. Inside, walnut woodwork, original flooring, a large fireplace with built-in cupboard, and a steep stair reminiscent of log-house ladder stairs survive. Rinehart, a Virginia native, reached Auglaize County in 1836 and was among its earliest settlers. He served as one of the first three county commissioners, as a justice of the peace for twelve years, and on the State Board of Equalization. By 1880 he held over 900 acres. His Virginia background shaped an interior unusual among the German settlers' homes nearby. Outbuildings include a brick smokehouse, a former blacksmith shop, a barn and a chicken coop.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Hugh T. Rinehart (builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and a private residence; the smokehouse is in poor condition with restoration planned.
