The house is believed to date from the 1820s, and the complex was assembled and expanded in the nineteenth century.","why_significant":"The complex is presented as an intact example of vernacular building traditions and of nineteenth-century rural life in western North Carolina. Its hewn-log outbuildings illustrate log construction techniques important to the settlement of the state. The farm is also tied to Joseph Samuel Holbrook, a leading local businessman, farmer and civic figure.","narrative":"Set in a clearing ringed by wooded mountains near Traphill in north Wilkes County, this farm includes a two-story frame house, four nineteenth-century hewn-log outbuildings, a frame barn, and a board-and-batten dormitory moved from a nearby Baptist school. The house, probably built about 1826 according to a brick found in a chimney, follows a traditional regional plan with shed rooms across the rear and a shed porch in front, and its interior woodwork shows Federal style influence. The granary, smokehouse, springhouse and corn crib are built of hewn logs joined with half-dovetail notches, a method important to the state's settlement. Joseph Samuel Holbrook acquired the farm in the early 1870s. A businessman and farmer, he built an estate reaching 1,000 acres with twenty-nine outbuildings, and he served as a Traphill Institute trustee and as chairman of the county commissioners. The complex remains largely unspoiled, and the property remains in the Holbrook family.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular with Federal style trim","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition fair and largely unaltered; the farm remains in the Holbrook family.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.455861-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/7228/47722839/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/78001985.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001985/d49d02c683-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001985/d49d02c683-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"G Keith Hall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holbrook_Farm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">G Keith Hall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holbrook_Farm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722839","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holbrook_Farm_(Traphill,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20708588"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wilkes-county/holbrook-farm-78001985/"}
