Belgrade was regarded as the most efficient plantation in the area. The chapel he built on his own land became a parish church, St. David's, in the 1850s.","narrative":"Two modest buildings in rural Washington County, North Carolina, preserve the legacy of Charles Pettigrew, an Episcopal priest and planter. Belgrade, a one-story frame house with a finished attic, was framed at his first plantation in 1797 and moved to the new site. Its Georgian finish is largely intact, and a kitchen, smokehouse and water tower survive behind it. Nearby stands St. David's Church, begun as Pettigrew's Chapel around 1804 and built at his own expense. The cruciform frame church was greatly remodeled and enlarged in 1857, and a later tower was added. Pettigrew was elected first bishop of the North Carolina diocese in 1795 but never traveled to be consecrated. His plantation was widely considered the area's most efficient, and it prospered under his son and grandson until the Civil War. The congregation moved nearer Creswell in 1898, leaving the old chapel seldom used.","period_of_significance":"1797, 1804 and 1857","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian (Belgrade); vernacular country church (St. David's)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent to good condition, and little altered; the old chapel is seldom used by the St. David's congregation, which moved to a new church in Creswell in 1898.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.375761-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/7227/47722746/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/78001983.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001983/bef29a2f6e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001983/bef29a2f6e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Waterman, Thomas T., creator","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_American_Buildings_Survey,_Thomas_T._Waterman,_Photographer_July,_1940._-_Pettigrew_House,_State_Route_1158,_Creswell,_Washington_County,_NC_HABS_NC,94-CRES.V,2-1.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Waterman, Thomas T., creator</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_American_Buildings_Survey,_Thomas_T._Waterman,_Photographer_July,_1940._-_Pettigrew_House,_State_Route_1158,_Creswell,_Washington_County,_NC_HABS_NC,94-CRES.V,2-1.tif"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722746","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgrade_and_St._David%27s_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4882654"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/washington-county/belgrade-and-st-davids-church-78001983/"}
