It was later known as Oakley Hall.","why_significant":"The house is among the most ornately treated of the Greco-Italianate houses associated with builder Jacob Holt, notable for its large scale and its ogee-arched doorway. It was the home of Dr. William J. Hawkins, a physician, planter, banker and long-time president of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. It is also tied to Ridgeway's post-Civil War development scheme and to the antebellum plantation society of Warren County.","narrative":"Standing in a grove of large trees beside the railroad at Ridgeway, this two-story frame house was built probably in the 1850s for Dr. William J. Hawkins and is probably the work of Warrenton builder Jacob Holt. Its cubical form, shallow hip roof and paired round-arched windows follow Holt's Greco-Italianate pattern, but the ornament is unusually dense. Pointed and ogee arches, many sawn brackets and a lancet-arched porch balustrade give it a full Victorian character, and the front door has a rare ogee-shaped surround. Hawkins was a physician who became a planter, banker and, from 1857 until 1875, president of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. In 1868 he led the Ridgeway Company, an unsuccessful effort to turn the village into a city. The house later passed to his son Marmaduke, a state senator, and then to the Peete family. Several one-story outbuildings survive behind it, and the property remains little altered.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"probably Jacob Holt","architectural_style":"Greco-Italianate with Gothic accents (Jacob Holt school)","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as fair condition and unoccupied at the time of nomination; the house and several outbuildings remain little altered.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.405778-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/7227/47722724/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/78001982.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001982/b51372b5c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001982/b51372b5c1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_J._Hawkins_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_J._Hawkins_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722724","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_J._Hawkins_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20639189"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/warren-county/hawkins-william-j-house-78001982/"}
