The main block dates from the original construction of 1849-1850, with dedication in 1851.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as a picturesque, prominent landmark of Pittsboro. The brick main block apparently survives from its mid-century construction, while most of the finish dates from remodeling after a destructive 1875 windstorm. The Victorian-era steeple and color scheme were restored in 1971. It was also probably one of the only brick buildings in Chatham County when built, aside from the 1840s courthouse.","narrative":"Brick walls and a tall three-stage steeple mark this Presbyterian church on North East Street in Pittsboro, a short distance east of the Chatham County courthouse. The congregation organized in 1848, later than the town's Methodist, Episcopal and Baptist groups, and bought a half-acre lot in 1849. The church was in use by 1850 and dedicated in 1851. It was then probably the only brick building in the county apart from the 1840s courthouse. A tornado in March 1875 blew off the steeple and crushed the roof, and the rebuilding gave the church much of its late nineteenth-century trim, including curvilinear cornice brackets and pedimented window frames. A 1920s replacement tower was removed in 1971 and replaced with a near copy of the 1870s steeple, and the dark and light paint scheme was restored. A one-story educational wing was added in 1953. No architect or builder is recorded.","period_of_significance":"1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in religious use.
