Its mid-century pedimented second-story overhang on square columns gives it a distinctive, Greek Revival-influenced appearance. The lower floor also served as a public meeting place for churches, schools and civic groups throughout the nineteenth century.","narrative":"Standing one block east of the Pittsboro courthouse square, this two-story frame building has housed Columbus Lodge No. 102 since construction began in 1838 under local carpenter Martin Hanks. The lodge struggled with debt through the 1840s, and did not secure title to its narrow lot until 1843. About 1849 the members enlarged the upper meeting room with a second-story overhang carried on a portico of tapered square wooden columns, which they chose over fluted ones. The addition shifted the main entrance from the east to the south and gave the building a modest classical temple look. Beyond Masonic meetings, the lower room hosted church services, schools, concerts, traveling photographers and other fraternal groups, and the Presbyterians met there after a storm damaged their church in 1875. The lodge lost its charter in 1878, was revived in 1891, and interior remodeling followed in the late 1890s. It remains one of the state's oldest functioning Masonic halls.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Martin Hanks, local carpenter/builder","architectural_style":"Greek Revival influences (variation of the classical temple form)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in good condition; the lodge has been active since its 1891 reinstatement, and members have followed restoration recommendations made in the late 1960s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.484666-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7195/47719567/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/78001938.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001938/36ee9861e1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001938/36ee9861e1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PITTSBORO_MASONIC_LODGE,_CHATHAM_COUNTY,_NC.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"00000442","name":"Pittsboro Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/pittsboro-historic-district-00000442/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719567","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsboro_Masonic_Lodge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18156863"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chatham-county/pittsboro-masonic-lodge-78001938/"}
