Both buildings are now used by the Calvary Baptist Church, the rectory as a church annex.","why_significant":"The nomination calls the church the best preserved early Gothic Revival church in Westchester County and the earliest surviving religious structure in the village of Ossining. It was designed by New York City architect Calvin Pollard, and few of his buildings survive in New York State. The Gothic Revival rectory complements it, and together they recall Ossining's nineteenth-century prosperity.","narrative":"Two Gothic Revival buildings on St. Paul's Place in Ossining, New York, form a church complex built during the village's nineteenth-century industrial boom. The church was designed in 1834 by New York City architect Calvin Pollard for a growing Episcopal congregation. Its walls are faced in rough Sing Sing marble quarried locally, with finished stone at the arches, sills and buttresses. Pointed arches frame the windows, doors and niches, and the interior retains exposed wood roof trusses and a large pointed chancel arch. A brick chancel was added in 1859, and a wood and slate spire of 1870 was removed in 1951. Across the street, a brick rectory built in 1864 echoes the church in its pointed-arch details. The Baptist congregation bought the church in 1958 and received the rectory in 1973. The complex is described as the best preserved early Gothic Revival church in Westchester County and one of the few surviving Pollard buildings in the state.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Calvin Pollard","architectural_style":"Early Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Both buildings are owned by the Calvary Baptist Church and occupied; the form lists present use as religious.
