Buildings date mainly from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century.","why_significant":"The district developed largely in the last two-thirds of the nineteenth century and has remained essentially unaltered for about fifty years. It is an unusual survival in a county and village that have seen much unplanned resort-driven growth. It also contains individually notable buildings: the Hillig Studio, the Keller house, the United Methodist Church complex and the Romanesque former Sullivan County National Bank.","narrative":"Twelve buildings along North Main, Academy and Law Streets make up this small district in the Village of Liberty, New York. The group mixes religious, commercial and residential uses and ranges from modest vernacular houses to a Gothic Revival villa, a Romanesque bank building and a Greek Revival church with an 1890 tower and belfry. The village grew as an agricultural center, was incorporated in 1870, and gained a tourist trade after the railroad arrived in 1873, which prompted building around the turn of the century. Highlights include the Hillig Studio of 1914, with its tile facade, built for photographer Otto Hillig; the Keller house, the oldest surviving residence in the village; and the United Methodist Church, whose Akron-plan interior is described as the finest in the area. The district was listed because it preserves a period streetscape that has largely disappeared from the surrounding, more modern village.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Various","architectural_style":"Mixed: Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Romanesque, and vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Mostly occupied; the Hillig studio and residence were described as being restored, and the Keller house was donated to the Town of Liberty for government use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.570882-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/78001921.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001921/9dcd58ae92-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001921/9dcd58ae92-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Methodist_Church_Liberty_NY_Apr_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Methodist_Church_Liberty_NY_Apr_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"06000266","name":"Liberty Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/liberty-downtown-historic-district-06000266/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322387","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Downtown_Historic_District_(Liberty,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6541703"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/liberty-village-historic-district-78001921/"}
